I stayed awake long enough for it to be March when I write you. I was set to get home from The Comedy Store around 11:30pm, but I added twenty minutes by stopping to pick up a pizza. I wasn’t going to eat late-night but it’s a new local spot, and through a simple search on my phone, I discovered they stay open til midnight on Fridays, so I took that as a sign from Demeter and pulled over. I don’t like it when people call pizza “Za.” It’s like going by Topher; I’d rather you not, but I can also just stay away.
When I got home with my pizza pie (pepperoni & green pepper), I put on ALONE Australia and sipped a Cali Creamin’ Vanilla Cream Ale. There is over half a can left and I’ve moved on to Red Licorice Aussie Style (which is how the container reads). In college I would’ve rather gone to UDF (United Dairy Farmer’s) for a cone than out to the bars for beer.
Haven’t tried to live without sugar but I can live without Amazon. Today was the boycott!! I think it would be so cool if we all stopped ordering from Amazon and start training to recover from FAST EVERYTHING. When I was a teenager I would win a Speech and Debate tournament in the Humorous Interpretation category usually a few hours from home. Afterward I’d sit in the back of the school suburban (we were too small to have buses ha) with the award in my lap the entire ride home before I could rush into my mom’s house and show her the trophy in person. Hours prior to my arrival she didn’t get a text from me and have to hold her finger over an image of the trophy to select a measly reaction. Nope! She found out when I walked in and I could see her reaction with my eyes and feel it too. Much stronger than just getting digitally hearted.
Whoops I went on a tangent. Tonight I did an 8:10pm spot at The Hollywood Improv first. I didn’t have time to finish my makeup because I waited until the last minute to force myself to listen to two set recordings from last week. They were from February 10th on Kevin Nealon’s Laugh Factory new material show, and February 20th which was Chris Fleming’s show at Largo. I really enjoyed both for different reasons, but the connective thread is I felt comfortable in the setting because of my friends Kevin and Chris and their fans. I was able to make some writing progress on both shows. I write onstage (with my brain to my mouth) while glancing down at a few key words jotted in my Milwaukee Tool notebook. So tonight I tried some of those joke areas again. It was so uplifting to be at the Improv with a good-natured crowd who came to have fun. There was one girl who sat as tall as a broom (audience right, stage left) and didn’t smile, but it’s not a big deal, I’ll just picture her before I fall asleep.
Next I went over to The Comedy Store for my 9:45pm spot and remembered I had some Boycott Amazon material I wanted to try. So I’ve decided to share that audio recording with you because a fran (friend/fan) told me that they would like very much to be apart of the process of my jokes evolving. Wow. My substack is truly BTS. Does everyone know that means Behind the Scenes? I don’t know when I learned it but I’m feeling ITK (in the know). Made that one up. Audio is below (and it’s at the top of this letter because I don’t know what’s going on). This is from the Original Room at The Comedy Store. Each comic finishes their set and brings up the next comic themselves. Can you tell who brings me up?
I participated in the Boycott today because I think it’s important. I hope others feel compelled to work up to extended boycotts so we can weed Jeff Bezos, the Waltons and other billionaires out of our pockets until they pay their fair share of taxes. I’m not sure where I’m going to get my fridge filters or this wave spray I like, but I’m guessing it’s on the supplier’s website. And I’ll be so much more excited when it shows up on my doorstep because I was building anticipation, re-training myself on patience. Plus you never really had free shipping, you paid almost a hundred dollars a year for Prime with a capital P and that stands for pawn.
I’ll miss Bezos’ Whole Foods but I won’t miss them asking if I’d like to scan my hand to pay at checkout. I should ask if they’d accept a blood offering instead, or perhaps a couple locks of my hair? Maybe they’ll settle for a full probe up my anus.
Okay I’m done. I hope you had a great February. Mine was so nice. I performed in Portland and was given some of the most thoughtful gifts from audience members! Thank you. I also did Sacramento and you Sacs really showed up for me.
Love,
Beth
